Childhood and Education

Moira Kelly was born on March 6, 1968, in Queens to Irish immigrant parents—a violinist and a nurse. She studied at Marymount Manhattan College. In 1984, she was invited to join the musical Annie. At that point, Kelly faced a life-changing decision: pursue acting or follow her childhood dream of becoming a nun. She chose the stage, and her role in the musical became the starting point of her career.

Career Path

Kelly made her professional acting debut in the 1991 miniseries Love, Lies and Murder, playing Cinnamon Brown, a teenager forced by her father to kill her stepmother—his wife. The series was based on the real-life 1985 murder of Linda Bailey Brown and Anne Rule’s book If You Really Loved Me. It’s a chilling story of twisted love, dark secrets, and the cruel manipulation of David Brown, who forced his daughter to prove her devotion in a horrifying way.

After that, Kelly took on smaller roles in films until she was cast in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992). The mystery-drama follows FBI agents investigating the murder of Laura Palmer and depicts her final days. It begins with a strange ring mark on her body and a mysterious letter “T” under her fingernail, leading detectives into a surreal world of hidden truths. Kelly played Donna Hayward, Laura’s best friend. A devout Catholic, she even sought her priest’s permission to appear in the movie because of its intimate scenes.

That same year, Kelly starred in the romantic sports comedy The Cutting Edge, playing a fiery figure skater paired with a cocky ex-hockey player as they chase Olympic gold. Filming wasn’t easy—she broke her ankle on set.

Other notable appearances include the 1994 dramedy With Honors, where she played Courtney Blumenthal, a student caught up in an unexpected friendship with a homeless man who finds and ransoms back pages of her classmate’s thesis. The film explores values, social status, and life’s priorities, reminding viewers of what truly matters.

That same year, Kelly starred in the crime drama Little Odessa. She played Alla Shustervich in the story of Joseph Shapiro, a contract killer working for the Russian-Jewish mafia in Brooklyn. His life unravels when he’s ordered to kill someone in his old neighborhood, where his parents and younger brother still live. The film, named after the Brighton Beach area, reflects the large community of Russian-speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union, especially Ukraine and Russia.

In 2022, the actress appeared as Jennifer Bergeron in the holiday dramedy My Southern Family Christmas. The film follows journalist Campbell Wallace, who gets a chance to meet her biological father for the first time. She pretends the encounter is strictly for a story about a new Louisiana official, unaware that the man is her father.

Kelly also directed two episodes of the teen drama One Tree Hill (2003–2012), which tells the story of half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott as they clash on the basketball court and in their personal lives in the small town of Tree Hill. She also returned to voice acting, lending her voice to Nala in The Lion King, The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, and The Lion King 1½. Nala, Simba’s childhood friend and later his queen, became one of Disney’s most beloved lionesses.

Personal Life

In 2000, Moira Kelly married Texas businessman Steve Hewitt. The couple has two children—a daughter, Ella, and a son, Eamon. Interestingly, while filming The Cutting Edge, Moira trained for more than two months with co-star D.B. Sweeney. Their time on the ice sparked a lasting friendship.
