No website menu games, no small plates, no mercy: Don Peppe in South Ozone Park serves southern Italian food in portions that make doggy bags a structural necessity, in a room perfumed with roasted garlic since before most of its rivals existed. It is the anti-trend restaurant — which is exactly why people who chase trends keep ending up here.
The Story
The family’s restaurant roots reach back to 1940s Brooklyn; the Ozone Park dining room has been going strong since 1968, a stone’s throw from the Aqueduct Racetrack. The walls wear jockey silks and framed horse photos, a nod to decades of racetrack clientele, and the operation still runs on old rules — family-style platters, brisk confident service and cash on the table.
What to Order
Three dishes carry legend status: baked clams crisped nearly black on top and creamy underneath, linguine with white clam sauce studded with chunks of roasted garlic, and the veal Don Peppe. Everything arrives on platters meant for the middle of the table, and regulars chase it with carafes of the ice-cold house wine. Ordering for fewer than four people is technically possible, but spiritually wrong.
The Space
A plain, bright, unpretentious hall of big round tables — the decor budget clearly went to the kitchen. What fills the room instead is noise: families, racetrack crews, food pilgrims and the constant percussion of platters landing on tables.
