Although they never reached widespread mainstream popularity, their innovative lyrics earned them a dedicated fan base. After experiencing a decline and disbanding, the group returned to the music scene with renewed energy in 2009. As alternative hip-hop artists, they gained critical acclaim, although they are rarely heard on mainstream radio or in popular music venues due to the genre’s niche appeal. Initially, Prince Po was a rapper, while Pharoahe Monch focused on beatboxing. Eventually, Pharoahe Monch transitioned to rapping as well. They attracted the attention of producers and signed a contract with the small record label Solid Sound Records, releasing two singles: Memories of Love and South Side in Effect.

Aspiring to join Russell Simmons’ hip-hop record label Def Jam Recordings, the duo needed a new name. A producer randomly pulled out a record by Organized Con Funk Shun and suggested the name “Organized Konfusion.” In 1991, the newly named group signed with the label Hollywood BASIC and released their self-titled debut album, Organized Konfusion. The single Walk Into The Sun gained some popularity, but the album itself did not chart on Billboard.

In 1994, the duo released their second album, Stress: The Extinction Agenda. Its lead single, Stress, entered the Hot Rap Singles chart. However, the track Stray Bullet became the album’s standout song. In 1996, Organized Konfusion contributed to the America is Dying Slowly compilation, an album aimed at raising HIV/AIDS awareness in African American communities, initiated by the non-profit organization Red Hot Organization. The group then joined Priority Records and released their third album, The Equinox, in 1997. Although it received less critical acclaim than previous albums, it featured the single Somehow, Someway.

Solo Careers

During the group’s existence, the rise of West Coast gangsta rap, which focuses on themes of crime and street life, overshadowed the commercial and cultural growth of alternative hip-hop. Struggling to gain widespread fame due to limited promotion, the duo members decided to pursue solo careers. Pharoahe Monch signed with Rawkus Records and released his highly acclaimed solo album Internal Affairs in 1999, featuring the hit song Simon Says. This track gained nationwide popularity, playing in clubs across the U.S. and on major radio stations. While Internal Affairs retained some stylistic elements of Organized Konfusion, it allowed Pharoahe Monch to fully explore his creativity. The album showcased his exceptional lyrical skills and unique concepts. After signing with SRC Records, Pharoahe Monch released his second solo album, Desire (2007).

Prince Po released his debut solo album, The Slickness, in 2004 through Lex Records. Although it did not achieve the same success as Internal Affairs, it reached the 53rd position on the CMJ Top 200 chart. Prince Po composed most of the songs in California, with his favorite track being Be Easy, dedicated to illustrator Matt Doo, who had died by suicide. The single Hold Dat received positive feedback from DJ Shadow, who described it as a track where underground rap embraced the present instead of clinging to its conservative roots. Prince Po’s second album, Prettyblack, was released in 2006, followed by Saga of the Simian Samurai in 2007.

Reunion

The revival of alternative hip-hop occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s when, in the age of the internet, mainstream audiences once again took an interest in independent music. Hoping to capitalize on this renewed interest in the genre, Organized Konfusion announced a reunion in 2004 with a third member, O.C. (full name Omar Credle). However, conflicts between O.C. and Prince Po ultimately prevented the reunion. It took another five years for the original duo to reunite. In 2009, Prince Po and Pharoahe Monch performed together at the All Points West festival in Jersey City, New Jersey, marking the official return of Organized Konfusion.

Organized Konfusion represents alternative hip-hop, a subgenre that encompasses a broad range of styles, often diverging from mainstream rap conventions. Alternative hip-hop artists defy traditional stereotypes associated with rap and blur genre boundaries.
