The institution opened in 1732 and was a basic two-story wooded structure. In its early years, the venue hosted plays, farces (comedies with external comic techniques) and other kinds of entertainment. In December 1750, at the Nassau Street Theatre, a traveling English troupe performed the first opera performance in the history of New York, “The Beggar’s Opera” by John Gay.

Subsequently, this theater was replaced by another wooden structure known as John Street Theatre. It was built in 1767 by the Englishman David Douglass as a New York home theater for a traveling troupe. “The Beggar’s Opera” and other ballad operas were also performed here. The ban on public speaking in October 1774 temporarily halted theater operations, and the British, who took control of New York, renamed the theater “Theatre Royal”. They held amateur shows there to boost the morale of their soldiers. Following the US War of Independence, John Street Theatre reopened. In the 1790s, ballad operas, opera adaptations and even French operas were staged there.

In 1798, the city opened a more elegant theater space, the Park Theatre. This exquisite building could accommodate 2,000 people and hosted a variety of theater, circus and dance performances. The original structure was destroyed by fire in 1820, after which it was rebuilt with an even higher capacity of 2,500 seats.

In 1825, the popular English-language opera ballad gave way to Italian opera. In November of that year, the first performance of Gioachino Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” took place in New York, across from City Hall Park. By the 1830s, the city was already staging English-language, Italian and French shows.

WHEN AND WHO FOUNDED THE QUEENS OPERA THEATRE?

Queens Opera Theatre was founded by Brian Gill in 2016 with the goal of introducing professional opera to Queens residents. Gill received his education at the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Early in his career, he toured as a professional musician in the United States, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Caribbean. During this period, Brian built commercial relationships with key community representatives, corporate sponsors and others.

HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SITE

In 2016, Queens Opera Theatre received a grant to perform at Flushing Town Hall Performing Arts Center. It is a historic town hall that was originally the center of government for the Flushing settlement, which was annexed to the city of New York in 1898. During the Civil War, Flushing Town Hall served as a gathering place for Union Army recruits and also functioned as a bank, police station, prison, grand ballroom and courthouse.

The legendary abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who fought for the abolition of slavery, gave a speech here in 1865 about the importance of African-American participation in the Civil War. Also, showman Phineas Taylor Barnum performed his famous shows in the local hall. In addition, the first-floor gallery space housed a popular jazz club.

After acquiring the historic building in 1990, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts focused on the mission to promote interdisciplinary global art.

Queens Opera Theatre offers affordable opera performances for art enthusiasts, enabling people from many economic backgrounds to enjoy the harmonious combination of words, music and motion.
